“Steve Swanson discusses how to reduce the risk of ACL injuries with females. In this interview he expands on what current research shows, program design elements, assessments and guidelines, as well as what a well designed training programs should include.”

Steve is the Chief Science and Technology Officer at Athletic Republic where he is in charge of product development and research. Steve has worked as biomechanist for over 10 years at The Orthopedic Specialty Hospital (TOSH), an official sport science provider for the U.S. Olympic Committee. Steve was a biomechanics consultant/Director of R&D for Frappier Acceleration® Sports Training (from 1996-2007) as well as consulting for a number of sports equipment and orthopedic companies during that time. Steve served as Chair of the Technology Section for the 6th International Olympic Committee’s World Congress on Sports Science and Medicine. He also served as a consultant to the NCAA’s Education and Outreach Division in the development of its online Injury Surveillance System. He has published several peer-reviewed research papers and presented at numerous international conferences. Steve is currently ABD for his Ph.D. in biomechanics at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with Dr. Graham Caldwell, studying sprinting biomechanics in relation to the limitations of sprinting speed.

Mark Peterson, PhD, CSCS,*D, USAW

Dr. Mark Peterson received his Ph.D. from Arizona State University,. He is currently a National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Michigan, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation as well as adjunct professor of Human Movement at AT Still University. As a practitioner, Dr. Peterson has also worked in personal training and strength and conditioning for the last 11 years, and has been involved with hundreds of athletes at the high school, collegiate and professional level. He has also worked extensively with various firefighter academies and departments, to complete research and professional training. Mark has been able to present his work at many national and international conferences, and has published numerous peer-reviewed research articles. He has also been asked to contribute to several book chapters related to exercise testing and prescription. He is a certified (CSCS) Sports Performance Coach through the (USAW).

Jeff Kipp, M.S., C.S.C.S, is the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. Jeff has been involved in the strength and conditioning field since 1995 when he graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in Kinesiology. He began his collegiate coaching career in 2001 at Colorado School of Mines before a short stint at the University of Denver. Kipp began his Air Force Academy coaching career in 2004 and has developed athletes on many of the academy’s 29 varsity sport teams. Kipp currently serves as the strength and conditioning coach for Hockey, Lacrosse and the Sprinters, Jumpers and Pole Vaulters for the Track and Field Team.

Peter is currently the Education Department Manager for the NSCA education department. He has recently returned to the NSCA after a 3 year term as the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for the United States Olympic Committee based in Colorado Springs. Prior to that he was the Educational Programs Coordinator for the NSCA. His experience includes six years as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach for the United States Air Force Academy. Patrick is the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach at Castle View High school in Castle Rock, CO. His Masters degree is in Physical Education, emphasis Kinesiology from the University of Northern Colorado. Patrick is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist with Distinction and a Coach Practitioner with the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He is also a Certified Club Coach with USA Weightlifting. Patrick has worked with athletes from youth to the Elite level in a wide variety of sports. Many of my high school athletes go on to play volleyball, wrestling, football, softball, soccer and lacrosse at the colligate level. In 2003 he was the regional Strength coach of the Year for American Football Monthly, in 2005, was the NSCA High School Strength Coach of the year and in 2006 received the Editorial Excellent Award from the Strength and Conditioning Journal. Patrick is published in books, journals, internet manuals and videos, is the former state director for the NSCA, on the NSCA High School SIG executive committee and the Colorado High School Coaches Association board.

Lori has been working with military commands over the past 9 years with a wide scope of experience ranging from providing nutrition support to special operations commands, training fitness command leaders on aircraft carriers, submarines and within the aviation community, and developing performance nutrition training programs. She is currently co-writing the Special Operations Nutrition Handbook which will be published next summer. Lori is an adjunct professor in sports nutrition at Norfolk State University and owns a private consulting business working with marathoners, triathletes and ultra distance racers. She runs for the Clif Bar Marathon Pace Team and is currently training for the Lake Placid Ironman Competition in July 2007.

Jeff Segal

Jeff discusses his triumph over MS through strength and Conditioning.

Currently Jeff is the owner of Balanced Personal Training, Inc, as well as co-owner of Personalize Your Fitness, LLC. His companies are based in south Florida where he is a personal trainer and motivational speaker. Jeff is also the 2007 NSCA Personal Trainer of the Year.

At the age of 25, Jeffrey Segal was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Within two years, he was spending the better part of his days in a wheelchair due to balance difficulties, partial paralysis, visual impairment, chronic fatigue, and a host of other symptoms common to those with MS. Jeff was unwilling to yield to the disease, and instead, launched his own wellness and rehabilitation program.

Al Vermeil is the only strength coach to have World Championship rings from BOTH the NFL and the NBA. He is also the only strength coach who has been in the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball. Al was honored by being one of the initial inductees to the Strength Coaches Hall of Fame in June 2003

Al is President of Vermeil Sports and Fitness, Inc. VSF specializes in athletic assessment, conditioning and training. All clients receive individualized evaluations and programs. VSF is currently a consultant to the Chicago Bulls.

He received a BS degree from Pennsylvania State University. Doug has been involved in the strength and conditioning of athletes for over 20 years. Some of the athletes Doug has aided include: former KC Chief's quarterback Matt Blundin, #1 ranked US Marathoner, Steve Spense. Doug is a USA Weightlifting Federation Club Coach and is on the Editorial Board for the American Running Association.
