Speed & Agility Training for Today’s Athlete – Part 1
by Bobby Smith, MS, CSCS,*D, RSCC*D

The speed and agility programing at RYPT is unique due to Coach Bobby Smith’s football and track & field background. He took components of these two sports to develop both the linear system (for first step quickness and breakaway speed) and lateral system (for lateral agility focusing on change of direction and deceleration while reducing the risk of injury and improving performance). This presentation takes coaches through the programmatic aspect of the RYPT 12-week program.

Concepts & Strategies of Velocity Based Training

Velocity Based Training (VBT) has recently become a common method of strength and power training as an alternative to percentage-based loading.  It also offers strength & conditioning professionals many advantages including but not limited to; the ability to individualize training, provide immediate feedback, create individual profiles, evaluate daily readiness, effectively estimate and test 1RM’s, and monitor fatigue, etc.  It is vital to understand relevant, effective and efficient VBT concepts, their applications and the intended versus actual adaptations that result.

This talk will emphasize the importance of nutrition as a tool for optimal health and sport performance. Instead of shrinking the body, the focus should be on fueling it properly to sustain high-intensity training, enhance performance, and promote recovery.

Key topics will include:

  • The dangers of low energy availability and its impact performance and injury risk
  • How to strategically fuel before, during, and after training for peak performance
  • Nutrient timing and composition to support muscle growth, bone health, and recovery
  • Practical strategies for shifting the mindset from restriction to nourishment

Practical Applications of Velocity Based Training

Attendees will explore a small variety of current VBT technologies and gain an understanding of how to implement and leverage the athlete/client force-velocity profile.  Get hands on experience trying multiple modes and exercises with VBT.  Visualize the potential of immediate objective feedback with individualized and optimized performance being the driving factors.

Kettlebell Fundamentals

Learn the basics of kettlebells.  How to perform the swing, rack positions, and clean.  How to properly do a kettlebell snatch, without hurting your wrist! We will also be going over how to do different racked carries, as well as stringing them all together for circuits.

    All refund requests must be submitted in WRITING and should include the reason for cancellation. NO refunds will be accepted via phone. A 50% refund will be granted on or before the early registration date. NO REFUNDS will be given after the early registration date.

    If they are available, you will receive them via email within 2 weeks after the event.

    Will I receive a Certificate of Attendance?
    Yes. A certificate will be emailed to you approximately 2 weeks after the event.

    How do I report my CEUs?
    The NSCA will automatically apply the CEUs to your NSCA Account. If you need to report CEUs elsewhere, you may use the Certificate of Attendance.

    Can anyone register for this event?
    Yes. Anyone who is interested in an NSCA Event can register.

    Do I need a Membership to register?
    No. You only need an NSCA Account to register. If you do not have one, you can create one for free.
