Peri-Surgical Nutrition: Accelerating Higher-Quality Recovery and Return-to-Play
by Cliff McArthur, MS, CSSD

Injury is an inevitable component of sport and physical training and often leads to surgery. Post-operative outcomes are profoundly influenced by an individual's nutritional status. While the most pronounced effects are seen with those who are clinically malnourished, outcomes in individuals at otherwise healthy weight and body composition can still be heavily and negatively affected by suboptimal status as might concern only a few nutrients. We now know as well after nearly 20 years since the first enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols and guidelines were published that outcomes including the quality and pace of recovery and rehabilitation can be optimal.
